Frequently Asked Questions: Scuba Diving
I’ve never been scuba diving before — can I still participate?
Absolutely! Our Discover Scuba Diving experience is perfect for beginners. No certification or prior experience is required — we’ll start in the resort pool, teach you the basics, and then guide you through a safe, shallow ocean dive.
What’s the minimum age to try scuba diving?
- Discover Scuba (with ocean dive): Ages 12+
- Bubble Maker (pool-only intro): Ages 8+
I’m a certified diver — what dives can I do from the resort?
We offer several guided dives for certified divers including:
- Wailea Point Reef Dive
- Scooter Dives using Diver Propulsion Vehicles
- Night Dives
- Off-site Dives around Maui
All are led by our experienced PADI professionals and depart just steps from your room at the Fairmont Kea Lani.
How long does a dive take?
Most single-dive experiences (like the Reef Dive or Scooter Dive) take about 1.5–2 hours, including setup, safety briefing, and underwater time. Certification courses require multiple days/mornings depending on your level.
Do you provide all the gear?
Yes! All scuba gear is included for our guided dives, beginner classes, and certification courses. If you have your own equipment, you’re welcome to bring it.
What’s a Scooter Dive and do I need special experience?
A Scooter Dive uses a battery-powered Diver Propulsion Vehicle (DPV) to help you cover more reef with less effort. It’s one of our most popular certified diver experiences and requires only basic scuba certification — no prior scooter experience needed.
Can I finish my scuba certification with you?
Yes! We offer:
- Full PADI Open Water Certification
- eLearning Certification (start at home, finish in Maui)
- Open Water Referral (finish your certification here after starting it elsewhere)
- Advanced Open Water certification for certified divers looking to expand their skills
How many days do I need for Open Water Certification?
If you complete your eLearning before arrival, plan on 3 mornings for the in-water training and dives. If you haven’t started yet, we offer the full course with online + in-person components, which takes 3–4 mornings to complete.
What if I get nervous or need extra support?
Our instructors specialize in working with first-time divers and nervous swimmers. We’ll move at your pace, and safety is always our top priority. For maximum support, consider a private or Discover Scuba session with 1-on-1 attention.
Where do the dives take place?
Most of our dives depart directly from Polo Beach, right in front of the Fairmont Kea Lani. For Off-Site Dives, we’ll coordinate based on ocean conditions and your preferences.
What happens if ocean conditions are poor?
If conditions are unsafe or visibility is too low, we’ll offer to reschedule or refund your booking. Your safety and satisfaction come first.
